Commission for Domaine d’Arbousset

I was commissioned by Domaine d'Arbousset to create artwork for the labels of two different red wines, affectionately named after their children - Maximus and RL (Raphaël).

I really wanted to capture the colour wheel that comes to mind when I think of red wine and the environment of the vineyards. I did a series of experiments within this colour spectrum, working mainly with colours such as magenta, purple and earthy brown.

The winemakers kindly sent me a bottle of each wine before I started the project as a source of inspiration, and while I enjoyed tasting their wines, I took the opportunity to use them in my experiments.

Unlike clothing, wine does not really stain the paper and canvas as much as you might expect; it is mainly clear, but it does add a glaze of purple colours to the texture. This is why I have been incorporating drops into my various painting experiments for this project, and it has found its way through to the final piece, the labels are imbued with the flavours of the wine that they represent.

As the project progressed, I began to work with different colours, inspired by the region where Domaine de Arbousset is based, in the south of France near Avignon. I tended towards lighter colours that I associated with the Mediterranean sea and sand. I ended up experimenting with a third series of sketches within a more blue and sandy colour.

It turned out that this last experiment suited her vision for the label of another bottle - Tavel Rosé - that she was working on; the commission evolved into making labels for three different wines that are now sold internationally.

The winemakers were delighted with the result and the feedback they gave me after the launch was very positive: the original labels help the bottles stand out from the competition.

Let's work together.
