Ember Agate
Ember Agate belongs to Aegean Gems, a series of three works born from Arthur’s process: painting with acrylic, scanning the surface at very high resolution, then isolating a single fragment and enlarging it until it becomes a world of its own.
Agate takes its name from the Achates, a river in Sicily where the ancient Greeks first gathered it, and it became one of the most treasured stones of the Aegean, carved into the tiny seals of Minoan and Mycenaean rulers. Ember Agate opens the stone like a geode: a violet heart, still cooling, held inside a crust of ochre, rust and molten yellow, with fine blue veins tracing every crack. It reads at once as a gemstone and as an island seen from far above, a land still being formed.
