Lapis Atlas

£80.00 - £625.00

Lapis Atlas belongs to Aegean Gems, a series of three works born from Arthur’s process: painting with acrylic, scanning the surface at very high resolution, then isolating a single fragment and enlarging it until it becomes a world of its own.

For six thousand years, lapis lazuli, a deep-blue metamorphic rock, has come from the mountains of Badakhshan, once part of the Persian Empire. It travelled west along the old trade routes and across the sea, until it reached the palaces of Bronze Age Greece. Ground into pigment, it later became ultramarine, the most precious blue a painter could own. Lapis Atlas maps that journey: drifts of deep blue and flakes of gold scattered across a pale land, like a chart of coastlines and routes seen from the sky.
